Be Part of the Solution: Addressing Delaware's Opioid Epidemic and Its Impact on Construction
Wednesday, August 30, 2023 (2:00 PM - 3:00 PM) (EDT)
Description
In 2023, there have been 247 suspected overdose deaths in Delaware to date. State-level studies have found that construction workers are six to seven times more likely to die from an opioid overdose than workers in other professions. In 2019, 22.8% of Delaware’s overdose deaths were among individuals working in the Construction and Installation, Maintenance and Repair Industries.
Despite these troubling statistics, everyone can play a role in helping to reduce the impact of the opioid epidemic on our industry and state. During this training, experts from the Delaware Division of Public Health’s Office of Health Crisis Response and their partners will share concrete strategies to help you be part of this solution. This interactive training will include information on:
- Industry realities that lead to increased addiction and overdose risk among construction workers
- How substance misuse changes a person’s brain function and impacts their behavior
- Available resources for treatment and support in Delaware, if you or someone you know needs help related to substance use
- How to recognize and response to an overdose, including the use of Narcan
Attendees will also receive a free Overdose Response and Narcan kit from the Delaware Division of Public Health in follow up to the training.
